Dodos settled in Mauritius over 4 million years ago. With no predators, they lost their ability to fly and lived on fruits that had fallen from trees. In 1505, The Portuguese became the first human settlers, and the dodos became a source of fresh meat for the sailors. Later, in 1638 the Dutch used the island as a penal colony. Rats, pigs and monkeys ate dodo eggs in the ground nests. The last one was extinct in 1681.
